Sizes of Signal Flags on Ship and Sailors

One place that I always love to look at is the Navy site and some of the pictures that they have of signal flags. The picture below shows Sailors aboard the USS Carl Vinson. The checkered flag on there is the letter “N” in signal flags. Signal flags come in various sizes. The No O is the closest to IB Designs, USA flags with ours being slighter smaller.

In the picture below the size is really big so that it can be seen for a distance. It’s probably a No. 14: 4 ft. x 6 ft.

To give you a perspective I inserted one of our signal flags just to give you a general idea of the difference. Our flags are 8in x 8in.  Also the Navy’s signal flags are made out of nylon to be able to withstand salt, high winds, storms, etc.

Our flags are more for decoration and although they can be hung outside for special occasions they are geared more towards indoor use for long term. With the cotton/polyester blend they will last for many years with the right care.
