Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed annually in the United States on the last Monday of May. Formerly known as Decoration Day, it originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the fallen Union soldiers of the Civil War. (Southern ladies organizations and southern schoolchildren had decorated Confederate graves in Richmond and other cities during the Civil War, but each region had its own date. Most dates were in May.) By the 20th century Memorial Day had been extended to honor all Americans who have died in all wars. Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces..As a marker it typically marks the start of the summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end.

Vertical Signal Flag Banners for Home or Gifts

Our Vertical banners are quite popular especially first or last names. They are perfect when you don’t have a lot of space but want to decorate a room with nautical or coastal decor. Before shipping the banners below I took some pictures with my new camera to show them closer up. A ladder that would cover the full door, top to bottom, would have about 6 flags, although you could use 7 flags if the bottom can go almost right to the floor. The picture below is 5 flags hung on a long hanger over my door to give you an idea of scale.

We make all our flags from high quality Kona cotton, with some polyester-cotton areas. They’re “one sided,” in that the back of the flags have a white cotton lining. We don’t recommend using them in a saltwater ocean setting, but you’ll have no trouble hanging them outside on your front door. The only problem with salt water is that when it dries, it leaves a salt residue. Treat our flags as you would any linen fabric item.  Below is a picture showing the back of our flags. All flags are stamped as seen below with the corresponding letter.

You let us know the letters you want, and we’ll make the flags, build a ladder, and hang the flags. It’s all set to hang, right out of the package. We include a 1-inch brass ring at the top, but you can remove it or use something else if you’d like. It’s all put together using ordinary knots.

Lastly here is a picture of a banner spelling SWIM.

New London, CT- A Seaport City

I am always looking for creative and unusual ways that people use Signal Flags. Recently it came to my attention that New London, CT has a beautiful display of signal flags posted on the police headquarters welcoming people to New London. The New London Rotary Club did this has a project and you can see the results below. With permission photos below were taken by Rick Gipstein. He is a member of the New London Rotary Club and they did this as a project. He is an architect and a signal flag fan.

New London also has a big naval base. The Naval Submarine Base New London is located in the southeastern corner of Connecticut in the County of New London. The base is settled amongst historic villages and busy urban centers in the city of Groton. Naval Submarine Base New London is the Navy’s first submarine base and “Home of the Submarine Force.” Every officer and nearly every enlisted Sailor in the submarine force will be assigned here at least one time during a military career, carrying on a tradition that’s more than a 100 years old. If you wish to read more click on the link to read about the history of it.

Lastly here is a view of New London, Connecticut from across the Thames River at Ft. Griswold Battlefield State Park in Groton.
